KLADNO – The City of Kladno is facing a long-term problem in the care of its extensive housing stock. A significant part of the more than four hundred residential units are located in historic apartment buildings, which cannot be insulated using standard methods due to monument protection. This leads to the formation of thermal bridges, moisture condensation and the subsequent development of mold. However, the City Hall has found a solution in the modern technology of reflective insulation materials.
The problem with historic buildings and mold
The management of historic buildings, many of which are listed by UNESCO, represents a great challenge for the city. Classic external insulation systems are unacceptable for these buildings, as they would disrupt their historical character and the plasticity of the facade. Residents of apartments in these buildings often face high energy costs and, above all, health risks associated with the occurrence of mold, which occurs as a result of thermal bridges and insufficient insulation.
Innovative solution: ALPHA INNER
The city decided on a pragmatic and innovative approach and chose to apply the reflective insulating coating ALPHA INNER. This special material works on the principle of reflecting thermal radiation back into the room, thereby increasing the surface temperature of the walls and preventing condensation of water vapor. Humidity is a key condition for mold growth.
The coating thus solves two problems at once: it insulates the interior, thereby increasing thermal comfort and reducing heating costs, and at the same time eliminates the very cause of mold. In addition, application is possible from the interior, so it does not disrupt the appearance of the listed facades.
Gradual implementation and results
Kladno has gradually applied the coating ALPHA INNER as part of the reconstruction of city apartments. The aim is to treat and modernize the entire problematic housing stock in this way. Initial results show that this is an effective way to improve the quality of living, save energy and protect both the health of tenants and the historical value of buildings.
This step confirms the efforts of the city of Kladno to use modern technologies for the effective management of its assets and to ensure healthy and comfortable housing for its citizens.
